Acts of Leadership

In Troop 30 we require all scouts to perform at least 3 “Acts of Leadership” as part of advancing to Star, Life, and Eagle. There is often confusion regarding what qualifies, so this page defines what the Acts are and explains why we require them. Please read this very carefully.

What Qualifies?

These “Acts” involve leading an event or activity:

  • Leading an outing
  • Giving a presentation at a Troop meeting
  • Leading an activity or game at a Troop meeting
  • Being SPL for a Court of Honor

By “leading” this means you must plan, coordinate, and executethe event. If we asked anyone at that event who was “in charge,” they would immediately know it was you.

Assisting or being helpful is not sufficient — you need to be the one who planned, coordinated, and executed the event.

What Does NOT Qualify?

  • An elected or appointed leadership position is not an “Act.” Even being SPL does not count here — it counts toward “Serving in a Leadership Role.”
  • Leadership duties required by your position do not count. They are requirements of the position, not Acts of Leadership.
  • The event must be a Scouting event — within Troop 30 or as part of a Philmont Crew, Jamboree troop, etc. Outside leadership does not count.

Expectations by Rank

Star Rank

It is sufficient to count leading a game at a troop meeting as one of your 3 Acts.

Life Rank

We expect the complexity to increase to at least giving a presentation. We strongly encourage at least 2 Acts to be activities outside of troop meetings, such as campouts or other outings.

Eagle Rank

All 3 Acts should be substantial — no games or presentations. They should be outings (preferably at least one campout), and we strongly encourage filling at least one significant role such as SPL for a week at Oljato or Crew Chief at a high adventure camp.

Important Notes

  • If you do more than 3 Acts at a particular rank, the excess does not carry over to the next rank — you still need 3 new Acts.
  • You cannot repeat the same act and count the repeats toward higher ranks without prior Scoutmaster approval.

Purpose of This Requirement

This requirement ensures advancing scouts have opportunities to serve as leaders in Scouting America. At Troop 30, we use Acts of Leadership as part of the first requirement to “be active in your troop.” Leadership is perhaps the most important skill scouts learn in Scouting America.

If you have any questions, contact your Scoutmaster. Do not wait until your Scoutmaster Conference to discover you have not met this requirement.
